A year in Denver

The events, the seasons and the weather, month by month.

By Ryan Garvey, Broker Associate, Compass · Updated

Denver runs on a calendar of its own: a stock show every January, a beer festival in October and a summer of afternoon thunderstorms. Here's the year as it usually goes, month by month, with the weather that comes with it.

Dates move every year, so check each event's own site for this year's. A few venues have moved recently too, and they're noted below.

The weather, in short

First and last freeze
On average Denver's first freeze comes around October 7 and the last around May 5. Frost can come later, so many gardeners wait a bit past that date.
Snow
The first measurable snow usually falls in mid to late October and the last in late April. The long-term average is about 57 inches a season, and March is the snowiest month.
Hail
Hail picks up in late April and May and peaks in early to mid June. When you buy, ask how old the roof is and whether there's been a hail claim on it.
Summer storms
From July into August the monsoon brings afternoon thunderstorms, nearly every day by late summer.
Wind
Chinook winds, warm and dry off the mountains, come in the cold season and can gust very hard along the foothills.
Sun
Denver gets about 70 percent of its possible sunshine over a year.
